Nu er wereldwijd zo’n 450 miljoen tweets per dag worden gestuurd, neemt ook de hoeveelheid negatieve uitlatingen hand over hand toe. Zo was er na de verkiezingen in Amerika behalve vreugdezang ook een hoop negatief sentiment waar te nemen op Twitter, in de vorm van racistische uitlatingen. Maar sowieso wordt er heel wat af gevloekt in twitterberichten, hetgeen mooi in kaart wordt gebracht op de website WTFLevel.com.
Op WTF Level wordt een realtime analyse gemaakt van alle tweets waar scheldwoorden in voorkomen. In de grafiek bovenaan de site zie je precies op welke tijdstippen van de dag het meest gescholden wordt. Daarnaast staat er een schaal op de site die precies aangeeft hoeveel procent van alle tweets het afgelopen uur ‘negatief’ was. Dit leidt tot de zogenaamde ‘WTF index’, die uiteraard goed of licht verontrustend kan zijn.
Volgens de makers gaat het om een experimenteel project:
WTFLevel.com is a project to track and monitor the amount of swearing on Twitter at any given moment. It’s mostly a humorous attempt to get an idea of how aggravated the planet is at any moment.
We continuously check Twitter for references to a list of swear words. The list is private to prevent anyone from trying to manipulate the system, but as an example, the Seven Dirty Words are all on the list. At the moment, the list is made up of only swears in English.
Every 10 seconds we total up the count of all tweets containing a swear, and figure out the rate of sweary tweets from that. The stats on the website are updated in real-time with any new data.
We convert the rate into a ‘threat level’ – which is really just a spoof of theDEFCON system that kept you up at night as a kid, and also of the Homeland Security threat level. The possible levels are:
- Mostly Polite
- Mild Cursing
- Tirades
- Expletive-Laced
- Oh &@#?@&!
Whenever the threat level changes, we post that information to Twitter, so you can know right away.
